DONNA NON RIEDUCABILE

A THEATRICAL MEMO BY Anna Politkovskaja

by Stefano Massini

a project by and starring Elena Arvigo

Donna non rieducabile is an imaginary memo inspired to the reporting of Anna Politkovskaja, the Russian journalist well known for her commitment on the topic of human rights, for her coverage from Cecenia and for her criticism against President Vladimir Putin. On October 7, 2006, Anna Politkovskaja was murdered in the elevator of the building she lived in, while she was getting to her apartment. As of today, the investigation on her death is still ongoing. As soon as I read Donna non rieducabile it was clear to me that this wasn't simply a text to be adapted for the stage, but rather a study project, a path to walk on to try and be loyal to the spirit of Anna P. as well as Stefano Massini's, who wrote this play pulling his inspiration from these jumbled notes on life on the fringes of Russia. This is a drop in the ocean that turns into a meditation with the audience on the freedom of press, on working as a journalist, on the responsibility of knowledge and the responsibility of keep asking ourselves questions. (Elena Arvigo)

Stefano Massini, A graduate in Classics, he approached theatre as an assistant to Luca Ronconi at the Piccolo Teatro in Milano. His activity as a playwright takes flight in 2005, when he wins the Premio Pier Vittorio Tondelli, the top award for theatre writing in Italy, for his play "L’odore assordante del bianco". In 2007 he is awarded the Premio Nazionale della Critica at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, while the prestigious publishing house Ubulibri, belonging Franco Quadri issues three volumes with his plays, back to backi: "Una quadrilogia", "Trittico delle gabbie" and "Donna non rieducabile", a memo on Anna Politkovskaja. This last work has also become a short movie, lauded at the Mostra del Cinema di Venezia and later broadcast by RAI television. The greatest recognition is given to Stefano Massini thanks to an ambitious theatre trilogy on the Lehman Brothers bank: the play debuts in Parigi in November of 2013 (being awarded the Premio della Critica as best French play in 2013-2014), is published in Italian by Einaudi and is chosen by the Piccolo Teatro di Milano as a new debut in 2015, under the direction of Luca Ronconi, this when Massini's "7 minuti, directed by Alessandro Gassmann and a cast with eleven actresses, among them Ottavia Piccolo, was already part of the season at the Piccolo. Since 2015 he's been at the helm of the Piccolo Teatro itself.
